Privacy policy

Effective 31 October 2026.

Remain asks for very little: no account, no email, no password. This policy says exactly what is stored when you play, why, who else sees it, how long it's kept, and how to have it deleted.

Who is responsible

Remain (remain.games) is run by Daniel Denney, who is responsible for your information (the "controller", in the language of data protection law). Contact: danieldenney@bruneseau.com.

What is stored, and why

WhatWhyHow long
Your callsign: the name you type before playing. Shown to the other players in your matches, on the results screen, and on the public leaderboard if you do well. With your stats (below).
A random code your browser makes the first time you play, kept in your browser's storage with your settings. Ties your matches together into a record, without an account. It isn't linked to who you are. Until you clear your browser's storage, or delete your stats.
Your stats: matches played, wins, kills, deaths, damage, top-five finishes, best place, and when you last played, stored on the server under that code. Your record in the menu, and the leaderboard. Until you delete them, or two years after you last played.
Your settings (sensitivity, graphics, key bindings and so on), in your browser's storage. So the game remembers them. They never leave your device. Until you clear your browser's storage.
What happens in a match: where you move, what you press, what you hit. To run the match. It's held in the server's memory while the match is on. Gone when the match ends.
Technical logs: your IP address, browser and the addresses you request, recorded by the hosting provider; the server's own log also notes each match's winner by callsign. To keep the service running and secure, and to fix problems. 30 days.
Anything you send me by email: your address and what you write. To answer you. As long as the conversation needs, then deleted.

Remain doesn't ask for your real name, email, age, location, contacts or payment details, and doesn't use your camera or microphone.

Cookies and browser storage

The game itself sets no cookies. It keeps your settings and the random code in your browser's local storage, which it needs to work; you can clear it at any time in your browser's settings (you'll start a new record).

Advertising

Remain may show ads served by Google AdSense, on the site's pages, to pay for the servers. When it does:

Who else sees it

Your information is never sold. It's disclosed otherwise only if the law requires it.

Legal bases (EEA, UK and Switzerland)

Running your matches, your record and the leaderboard is done to provide the game you asked to play, and in the legitimate interest of offering a fair, working game. Technical logs are kept in the legitimate interest of security and reliability. Advertising cookies are used only with your consent where the law requires it.

The servers are in the United States. Where information about people in the EEA, UK or Switzerland goes there, it's protected by Google Cloud's data processing terms, which include the standard contractual clauses.

Your choices and rights

The game itself doesn't track you across other websites. Ads, when shown, follow the choices described above.

Children

Remain is not directed at children under 13, and doesn't knowingly collect personal information from them. In the EEA, players under 16 (or the lower age set by their country) need a parent's consent. If you think a child has given information, email me and it will be deleted.

Security

The site is served only over HTTPS, the database is reachable only from the game's own servers, and only the information above is kept. No system is perfectly secure; if you find a problem, please report it (see security.txt).

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date, and important changes will be announced on the site.
